  12.            World Wide Web:          WHAT'S NEW IN '92

  15.    Here's the latest (that we know) about W3, the hypertext information
  16.    system. The High-Energy Physics world got
  17.    its first official announcement of W3 in the CERN computer newsletter
  18.    released at Christmas, with an introductory article. However, there are
  19.    already many users of W3 outside HEP!

  24.    The new year starts with a release (version 1.1 - our first official
  25.    "version1" release) of the line mode browser.  This has protocol code in for
  26.    a wealth of new information, with:
  27.

  29.        o  Direct access to internet news groups
  30.           
  31.  
  32.        o  Direct access to " gopher " campus-wide information systems etc.
  33.           (Gopher  is system similar to W3 but using a web of menus and
  34.       plain text files rather than hypertext.  It is all readable as
  35.       hypertext using W3)

  38.        o  Browsing of remote directories using FTP. Before, files could be
  39.           read - now you can browse around as well. Any FTP site becomes a W3
  40.           information source.

  43.        o  Links directly to telnet (and rlogin) sites.  This allows
  44.           hypertexts to point to online communications facilities which don't
  45.           have servers.

  48.        o  Extensibility using gateways - you can configure www to use specific
  49.           gateways for any access protocol which might turn up in the future
  50.           which it can't handle directly.

  53.    The user interface is slightly improved,  and  you can save a document to a
  54.    file, pipe it, or print it (under unix).

  57.    The browser version can be picked up by anonymous FTP in the usual way
  58.    including source binaries for several platforms.

  61.    Those who have built other hypertext systems (such as Hyperbole and Viola)
  62.    on top of the www browser will immediately gain access to the all this newly
  63.    accessible information.

  66. W3 at SLAC
  67.  
  68.    Hot on the heels of the announcement of the W3 server for the "SPIRES"
  69.    High-Energy Physics preprint database at the Stanford Linear ACcelerator lab
  70.    comes news from Paul Kunz that the line mode browser is installed on all
  71.    unix systems at SLAC. Happy browsing, folks.

  74. Browsing on VM/CMS

  76.    The IBM mainframe at CERN now has a copy of the w3 browser (v0.14) running
  77.    in line mode. We are considering ways to make it more full-screen in the VM
  78.    style.  The v1.1 browser is under test and may be installed by the time
  79.    you get this. Other VM sites mail me for details.

  82. Browsing under X with Viola

  84.    A version of www running in the "Viola" hypertext system looks neat - I just
  85.    saw it running on an apollo and on a decstation. We shall release it soon
  86.    with the coming new version of viola.

  91.    The W3 demonstration had an enthusiastic reception at " HyperText'91 " in
  92.    San Antonio, Texas.

  95.    Jean-Francois Groff presented W3 live at the Software Engineering
  96.    and AI for High-Energy Physics workshop in La Londe, France.  We've also
  97.    been asked to demonstrate, as well as present a paper, at the Joint European
  98.    Networking Conference (JENC3) in Innsbruck, Austria, in May.
